Breast implant exchange is a surgical procedure that replaces existing breast implants with new ones to update the size or shape or to address complications, such as implant rupture or capsular contracture.
If you’re considering updating or replacing your breast implants, breast implant exchange might be the right option for you. Whether you want to change the size, shape or type of your implants or address concerns like implant rupture or capsular contracture, this procedure offers a way to achieve your desired look and maintain your comfort.
The existing implants are removed, often through previous incisions where practical, and new implants are placed. Dr Gus assesses the surrounding scar capsule and implant pocket. The capsule may be left alone, released or partly or fully removed, and the pocket may be adjusted to improve implant position or accommodate a different size. A breast lift may be considered if loose skin or a low nipple position will not be corrected by changing the implants alone. The procedure is tailored to your anatomy and the findings at surgery.
“Whether refining your silhouette with implants or returning to your natural contour, every decision is guided by patient safety, comfort, and aesthetic harmony.”
You can change the size, shape, or type of your implants to better match your current aesthetic preferences.
Addressing issues like implant rupture, rippling, or capsular contracture can enhance your comfort and restore confidence in your appearance.
Replacing older implants allows you to benefit from advancements in implant materials and designs, which may offer a more natural feel and appearance.
The procedure can rectify any asymmetry that may have developed over time.
By refining the implant placement or adjusting the breast pocket, you can achieve a more balanced and proportionate look.
Removing and replacing aging implants can alleviate concerns about implant lifespan and potential complications.
You can combine the implant exchange with other procedures like a breast lift to further enhance your results.
Each stage is designed around your comfort, safety, and outcome. Dr. Gus walks every patient through this process in detail during your fully private consultation.
Your consultation with Dr Gus begins with a discussion of your current implants, any symptoms and the changes you hope to make. He will examine breast shape, skin quality, nipple position, symmetry and implant position, and review your previous operative details where available. You will discuss suitable replacement implants, whether imaging is needed, and whether the capsule, pocket or breast skin needs additional surgery. Dr Gus will explain likely results, scars and the limits of what an exchange alone can achieve.
Before surgery, all relevant medical information is reviewed and factors that could influence your procedure and recovery are optimised. You will receive clear instructions regarding medications, smoking and nicotine, fasting before surgery, postoperative support and what to expect during your recovery.
Breast implant exchange is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Dr Gus removes the existing implants and assesses the capsule and pocket. Any planned capsule treatment or pocket adjustment is performed, and new implants are inserted. If a breast lift is included, excess skin is removed and the breast tissue and nipple position are reshaped. The incisions are closed, dressings are applied and a supportive bra may be fitted. Drains may be used when needed.
Recovery focuses on tissue healing and support, offering a predictable timeline for returning to everyday routines.
Swelling, bruising, tightness and discomfort are expected during the first few days. Pain is usually manageable with prescribed medication. You should rest but remain gently mobile, with regular short walks encouraged. Avoid lifting, pushing, pulling and strenuous activity. Many patients take approximately one to two weeks away from work, depending on the nature of their occupation.
Most patients feel considerably more comfortable and can gradually return to normal light daily activities. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and upper-body training should still be avoided.
Most routine daily activities can be performed comfortably, although strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should still be limited. The breasts may initially appear higher or firmer than expected. This gradually changes as the tissues relax and settle.
Most patients are feeling close to their normal routine. Light exercise can often be increased gradually.
Swelling continues to resolve and the breasts begin to assume a more natural position and shape. Activity levels can usually continue to increase gradually. The scars may still appear pink or prominent at this stage.
Most patients can return to the majority of their normal activities and exercise. Although the initial recovery period is approximately six weeks, the final breast shape and scar appearance continue to evolve for several months.
An exchange may suit someone who wishes to keep breast implants but change their size or appearance, or who has an implant problem that needs treatment. An individual assessment determines whether an exchange is suitable and what additional surgery might be needed.

Breast Augmentation
To increase the perceived size, restoring structural tone and vitality to the upper torso for a fuller, more balanced feminine form.
“For years, I felt that my silhouette didn’t quite match my active lifestyle. I wanted a change, but I was terrified of looking ‘overdone’ or artificial. Dr. Gus set my mind to rest. His approach turned out to be so considered the recovery was smoother than I anticipated, but the real impact was the confidence. For the first time, I feel completely at home in my own skin. I am just about the surgery. It was about the care and the precision behind it.”

Yes. A previous incision can often be used, but a longer or new incision may be needed for capsule work, pocket adjustment or a lift. Scars are permanent and generally soften and fade over time.
Not necessarily. A soft, healthy capsule can sometimes remain in place. A hardened capsule, rupture or abnormal finding may lead Dr Gus to recommend releasing or removing part or all of it.
Operating time depends on the condition of the existing implants, the capsule and pocket, and whether a breast lift is included. Dr Gus can give you a more useful estimate after planning your procedure.
Some patients return to desk work after approximately one to two weeks. Walking starts early, while strenuous exercise is resumed gradually, often around six weeks if healing is uncomplicated.
Breast implants are not lifetime devices, and there is no fixed date on which every implant must be exchanged. You will need ongoing follow-up and a future procedure may be required.
