What to expect during your Liposuction (Step by step)

Each stage is designed around your comfort, safety, and outcome. Dr. Gus walks every patient through this process in detail during your fully private consultation.

Personal Consultation

Your consultation with Dr Gus begins with a discussion of the areas that concern you and the change you hope to achieve. He will assess fat distribution, skin quality, any loose skin, scars and your overall health. You will discuss which areas are suitable for liposuction, the likely degree of improvement.

Before surgery, all relevant medical information is reviewed and factors that could influence your procedure and recovery are optimised. You will receive clear pre and post operative instructions and what to expect during your recovery.

The treatment areas are marked before surgery. Depending on the extent of treatment, liposuction may be performed under general anaesthesia or another suitable anaesthetic technique. Fluid is introduced into the tissue, then fat is removed through small incisions with a cannula and suction. The incisions are dressed, and a compression garment is fitted when appropriate. The procedure time and whether you go home the same day or stay overnight depend on the areas and volume treated and any combined procedure.

Recovery after Liposuction

Recovery involves managing fluid retention and supporting the skin as it retracts with a compression garment.

Expect swelling, bruising, soreness and temporary fluid drainage from the small incisions. Rest, take short regular walks and wear the compression garment as instructed. Avoid strenuous activity and follow your wound-care and medication instructions. Contact the practice for fever, increasing redness, sudden worsening swelling or pain. Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, shortness of breath or a painful swollen leg.

Bruising and discomfort usually begin to improve, although swelling remains. Many patients return to desk work and light daily activities within this period, depending on the areas treated and the demands of their job. Continue compression and avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise until cleared.

Routine activities generally become easier. The treated areas may feel firm, numb or uneven while swelling changes. Gentle walking can increase, but use your postoperative instructions to guide any return to more demanding activity.

A clearer outline often starts to emerge, although residual swelling can obscure the result. Low-impact exercise may be increased gradually if healing is uncomplicated and Dr Gus agrees. Continue the compression garment for the prescribed period.

Most bruising has settled, but firm or numb patches and intermittent swelling may persist. Build activity gradually according to comfort and your follow-up advice. Avoid judging the final contour at this stage.

Many patients can return to most normal exercise after review, provided healing is uncomplicated. Recovery varies with the number of areas treated and any additional surgery. Swelling and skin adaptation continue for several months before the final contour becomes clearer.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction may suit someone who is near a stable, healthy weight and wants to address specific deposits of fat. Good skin elasticity helps the skin adapt to the new contour. A personal assessment is needed to decide whether the procedure is appropriate.

Patient Inquiries

Will I have scars?

Yes. Liposuction requires small access incisions. Dr Gus plans their positions with the treated areas in mind. The scars are permanent but usually become less noticeable over time.

Some skin may contract as swelling resolves, but liposuction does not reliably correct significant laxity. If loose skin is a main concern, Dr Gus may discuss a separate skin-removal procedure.

Operating time depends on the number and size of areas treated, the amount of fat removed and whether another procedure is performed. Dr Gus can provide an individual estimate after your assessment.

Many patients return to desk work within one to two weeks, while physically demanding work may require more time. Gentle walking starts early. More strenuous exercise is resumed gradually when Dr Gus confirms that healing allows it, often around four to six weeks.

The removed fat cells do not grow back, but remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight. Ageing and changes in weight or skin elasticity can also alter the contour. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve the result.
